Ms. Holmes  from Toronto, Canada is involved in Arnis and Aikido.  She has also done extensive training in Hap-ki-do, self defense courses and karate.

Arnis, Kali, and Escrima are all words related to each other in the Filippino martial arts.  Kali is the mother art of the bladed weapon and it is where both Arnis and Escrima came from.  Arnis is a derivative of Kali as it diversifies and integrates the training of the blade with Impact Weapons (Bamboo Sticks and other assorted weapons) and hand to hand.  Escrima is more the sport side of Arnis.  It involves the full contact stick fighting as well as the anyo or kata.

Ms. Holmes is the head instructor of two schools - Aikido Sandokai & Combat Science.  She has been certified through to teach by training and learning from Grandmasters in the Philippines specializing in Impact & Edged Weapons, and is trained in all aspects of hand to hand combat.  Certification under the Grandmasters included various styles of Arnis taught only in the Philippines.  She is also an active International and National Competitor in WEKAF’s world full contact stick fighting championships.  Additionally she is on the executive board of the AWMAI (Association of Women Martial Art Instructors).

OKCD will host LAURA HOLMES for a seminar in March

FRIDAY-SUNDAY  MARCH 7-9, 2003

Friday  6-7:30  We will begin with basic stick warm-ups moving into sinawali drills.  We will work on single and double stick.  I will do some stick styling emphasizing the different movements and strikes, this “freestyle” can also be used as a warm up to develop flow, as well as used in sparring.  Then  some basic disarms.  Finally,  moving into the uses of  hand to hand”, “hand to stick” and “stick to stick” and how they apply to the concepts previously practiced.

Sat. 12-1:30  Warm up with some freestyle and basic passing drills.  Then move into the Herrada Batangua system.  Emphasizing the first six movements, including striking, checking, “parking” in close range using high, medium and low body positioning.
Sat.  2:30-4  Basic knife passing drills using the four psongs or four corners of the body.  Moving into basic techniques. Then knife flow drills into advanced techniques, including, disarm, controls and finishes for each technique.
Sun. 11-1  Finish the Herrada Batangua drill.  We will be stressing the same concepts as in the first half.  Then review and build on some different aspects of Arnis basics.  Maybe some E spada Y Daga.
