Why Study Karate at
Greats Lakes Dojo?

I have studied Okinawan martial
arts for 15 years. I started with
Sensei Barbara Christensen at the
Ann Arbor Okinawan Karate Club.
Sensei Christensen is recognized as
a leader in Shorin Ryu and has close
ties with the Grand Master. Her
students now lead dojo's across the
Country. I taught karate in her
dojo after receiving my black belt.
Prior to joining the Ann Arbor
Karate Club, I trained in Judo and
Isshin-Ryu karate.
I have had the good fortune of
training with Grand Master Eizo
Shimbukuro, a living legend, on four
seperate occassions: in Dallas,
in Ann Arbor and at his home
in Okinawa at the Shorin Ryu karate
dojo. While in Okinawa I obtained a
second degree black belt in Shorin
Ryu and also in Toei Ryu Torite
Jujitsu. Upon additional study I was
further promoted to third degree
black belt in Shorin Ryu. You can
find a more complete resume
here.
Our classes are taught in two
parts the first is Ippon Kumite (hand
to hand techniques) and Kubudo (weapon
techniques), and the second class is
Kata (prescribed techniques), the 7
aspects of Kata and Kata technique.
But Karate shouldn't be just about
learning Kata and self defense. It
is also about building self
confidence and coming together with
other students to reach a common
goal and having fun. |
